Problem

A man with passengers in his boat starts by rowing perpendicular to the flow of a river 200 m200\ \text{m} wide, flowing at 2 m s−12\ \text{m s}^{-1}. The speed of the boat in still water is 4 m s−14\ \text{m s}^{-1}. When he reaches half the width of the river, the passengers ask him to reach the point directly opposite their starting point. (a) Find the direction in which he must row to reach the required point. (b) How many times as much time will the journey take compared with the time it would have taken if he had denied the passengers?
