Problem

A composite straight wire consists of two segments joined end-to-end, each 40 cm40\,\text{cm} long. Segment 1 is aluminium of diameter 1.2 mm1.2\,\text{mm} and resistivity 2.7×10−8 Ω m2.7\times10^{-8}\,\Omega\,\text{m}. Segment 2 is manganin of diameter 0.60 mm0.60\,\text{mm} and resistivity 4.4×10−7 Ω m4.4\times10^{-7}\,\Omega\,\text{m}. (a) Calculate the resistance of Segment 1. (b) Calculate the resistance of Segment 2. (c) By comparing your answers to parts (a) and (b), comment on the suitability of each material for making standard resistors.
