Problem
A rifle of mass 3.0kg is initially at rest on a frictionless horizontal surface. It fires a bullet of mass 7.5g that emerges horizontally with a speed of 600m s−1 with respect to the ground.
(i) Calculate the speed with which the rifle moves immediately after the bullet leaves the barrel.
(ii) Determine the kinetic energy of (1) the bullet and (2) the rifle after the shot. Hence find the percentage of the total kinetic energy that is carried by the rifle.
