Problem

Three point charges are arranged along the yy-axis in the following order: • Charge +2.0 μC+2.0\,\mu\text{C} at y=0 my=0\,\text{m} • Charge +2.0 μC+2.0\,\mu\text{C} at y=0.30 my=0.30\,\text{m} • Charge −8.0 μC-8.0\,\mu\text{C} at y=0.90 my=0.90\,\text{m} (a) Write an expression for the yy-component of the net electric field Ey(y)E_y(y) at an arbitrary point on the yy-axis produced by the three charges. (b) Determine all positions on the yy-axis where the net electric field is zero. Show all algebraic steps leading to your numerical result(s). (c) For each position you found in part (b), indicate whether it lies between any two of the charges or outside the outermost charges, and briefly discuss the physical reason such a location can or cannot exist in that region.
