Problem

During a school sports meet a rubber ball is used for a throwing event. Study the following situations for the ball: (i) A ball of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} is thrown such that its kinetic energy at the instant of release is 72 J72\,\text{J}. Calculate the speed with which the ball leaves the thrower’s hand. (ii) A second ball of the same material but of mass 0.25 kg0.25\,\text{kg} is thrown so that it possesses the same kinetic energy of 72 J72\,\text{J}. Find the speed of this lighter ball. (iii) Compare the two speeds obtained above and comment on how mass affects the speed required to attain a given amount of kinetic energy.
