Problem

A solid uniform cylinder of mass 4 kg4\,\text{kg} is observed to rotate about its symmetry axis with an angular speed of 10 rad s−110\,\text{rad s}^{-1}. At this speed the rotational kinetic energy of the cylinder is 40 J40\,\text{J}. (i) Determine the moment of inertia of the cylinder about its axis of rotation. (ii) Hence calculate the radius of the cylinder. (iii) Find the radius of gyration of the cylinder about the same axis and comment on its numerical value in relation to the actual radius obtained in part (ii).
