Problem

A dentist uses a concave mirror to obtain an enlarged view of a patient’s tooth. The mirror’s focal length is 2.0 cm. In one examination the tooth is located 1.0 cm from the mirror’s surface; in a second examination the mirror is adjusted so the tooth is 4.0 cm from the mirror. (1) For the 1.0 cm object distance, determine qualitatively whether the image of the tooth is real or virtual, upright or inverted, and larger or smaller than the actual tooth. Justify your answers with a clearly labeled ray diagram. (2) Repeat part (a) for the 4.0 cm object distance, providing both the qualitative image properties and a justified explanation. (3) Describe one practical advantage and one practical disadvantage of using the mirror configuration described in part (a) as opposed to that in part (b) during dental work.
