Problem

An insulated straight wire is stretched horizontally along the north–south direction just above a freely pivoted compass needle. (i) State the direction (east or west) in which the north pole of the compass needle will deflect when a steady current of 2 A flows through the wire from south to north. (ii) How will the deflection change if the current is reversed while its magnitude remains the same?
