Problem

Carbonyl fluoride reacts with carbon dioxide according to COF2(g)+CO2(g)⇌CO(g)+COF2(g)\mathrm{COF_2(g) + CO_2(g) \rightleftharpoons CO(g) + COF_2(g)} At 500 K the equilibrium constant for the reaction is Kc=4.5K_c = 4.5. A sealed 3.00 L vessel at 500 K initially contains 0.300 mol COF2\mathrm{COF_2}, 0.200 mol CO2\mathrm{CO_2}, and 0.100 mol CO\mathrm{CO}. The vessel is then equipped with a movable piston and its volume is instantaneously doubled at constant temperature. Respond to the following prompts. (a) Calculate the initial molar concentrations of all species before the volume change. (b) Determine the value of the reaction quotient QcQ_c immediately after the volume is doubled. (c) State the direction in which the reaction must proceed to attain equilibrium in the expanded vessel and justify your answer using the comparison between QcQ_c and KcK_c. (d) Calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species after the volume expansion.
