Problem

In a basic solution, iodide ion is oxidized while hypochlorite ion is reduced. The skeletal half-reactions are given below. Oxidation (unbalanced, basic medium): I^– → IO_3^– Reduction (balanced, basic medium): ClO^– + H_2O + 2 e^– → Cl^– + 2 OH^– (a) Balance the oxidation half-reaction for basic conditions, including all necessary species (electrons, H_2O, and/or OH^–). (b) Combine the balanced oxidation and reduction half-reactions to obtain the overall balanced net ionic equation that operates in basic solution. Express the final equation with the lowest set of integer coefficients. (c) Demonstrate explicitly that the atoms of each element and the total charge are balanced in the overall equation from part (b). (d) State the minimum integer number of electrons that are transferred in the overall reaction you derived.
