Problem

A uniform thin rod of length LL and mass MM can rotate about three parallel axes that are perpendicular to the length of the rod: Axis P : passes through the centre of the rod Axis Q : passes through one end of the rod Axis R : passes through a point located midway between the centre and the same end (i.e. at a distance L4\tfrac{L}{4} from the centre). (i) Calculate the moment of inertia of the rod about each of the three axes. (ii) Arrange the three axes in increasing order of moment of inertia. (iii) If a constant torque τ\tau is applied separately about each axis, compare the angular accelerations produced and justify your answer on the basis of the results obtained in part (i).
