Problem

(Analytical interpretation of distance dependence) The product of two point charges is kept constant at a value Q0Q_{0}, while their separation rr is varied in air. (i) Show that the electrostatic force FF between the charges can be expressed in the form F=Kr−2F = K r^{-2}, where KK is a constant for the given pair of charges. (ii) By taking common (base-10) logarithms of the relation in part (i), obtain the equation of a straight line for a plot of log⁡F\log F versus log⁡r\log r. Write explicit expressions for the slope and the intercept. (iii) An experiment gives a slope of −1.95-1.95 for the log⁡F\log F versus log⁡r\log r plot. Discuss two possible experimental factors that could account for the deviation of this slope from the ideal theoretical value.
