Problem

A runner starts from rest at t=0t=0. His distance from the start increases uniformly to 15 m15\,\text{m} at t=3 st=3\,\text{s}. Thereafter his motion becomes non-uniform and his distance reaches 45 m45\,\text{m} at t=9 st=9\,\text{s}. At t=6 st=6\,\text{s} the distance–time curve passes through point (6 s, 30 m)(6\,\text{s},\,30\,\text{m}). A tangent drawn to the curve at this point passes through the additional point (5 s, 24 m)(5\,\text{s},\,24\,\text{m}). (a) Calculate the average speed of the runner for the whole 9 s9\,\text{s} journey. (b) Find his instantaneous speed at t=6 st = 6\,\text{s}."
