Problem

A straight conductor is placed in a uniform magnetic field. Answer the following questions. (i) State the rule used to find the direction of the force acting on a current-carrying conductor kept in a magnetic field. (ii) With the help of a clearly labelled sketch, describe how the three mutually perpendicular directions involved in the rule are represented by the fingers of the hand. (iii) A student asserts: "If the magnetic field lines point from North to South and the current in the conductor flows from West to East, the conductor will experience a downward force." Examine this statement, identify any mistake in the reasoning, and give the correct direction of the force with proper justification.
