Problem

Two point charges +5 μC+5\,\mu\text{C} and −3 μC-3\,\mu\text{C} are kept 0.30 m0.30\,\text{m} apart in air. A third charge of +1 μC+1\,\mu\text{C} is brought from infinity to the point exactly midway between the two fixed charges. Answer the following questions: (i) Calculate the electric potential at the midpoint due to the two fixed charges. (ii) Compute the work required to slowly bring the +1 μC+1\,\mu\text{C} charge from infinity to this midpoint. (iii) Find the total electrical potential energy of the three–charge system after the third charge is in place.
