Problem
Read the following situation and answer the questions that follow.
A car of mass m negotiates a sharp circular turn of radius 25m on a dry, level road at a constant speed.
(i) Identify the physical force that supplies the necessary inward pull on the car while it is negotiating the turn.
(ii) Predict and explain what would happen to the motion of the car and its passengers if this inward pull were suddenly lost, for example, if the tyres skidded on loose gravel.
(iii) Explain how wearing seat belts can reduce the risk of injury to the passengers in the situation described in (ii).
(iv) Suggest any two design features that road engineers can incorporate on such turns to make them safer for vehicles. Justify each suggestion briefly.
