Problem

Parent nuclide PP (half-life 20 y20\,\text{y}) decays to daughter DD (half-life 30 d30\,\text{d}), which further decays negligibly slowly compared with laboratory timescales. Initially only NP0N_{P0} atoms of PP are present. (i) Starting from the decay law, derive an expression for the ratio of the activities AD(t)/AP(t)A_D(t)/A_P(t). (ii) Show that for t≫T1/2(D)t\gg T_{1/2}(D) the activities of PP and DD become almost equal. (iii) Calculate the minimum time (in years, correct to one decimal place) after which ADA_D reaches 99%99\% of APA_P. (iv) Explain why the situation in this system is described as secular equilibrium.
