Problem
A 5.00 L cylinder at 25 °C contains 0.200 mol of neon and 0.300 mol of krypton, both behaving ideally. The cylinder is kept rigid and perfectly sealed.
Subsequently, 0.100 mol of xenon gas is injected into the cylinder, and the entire assembly is then warmed to 50 °C. No gas escapes during either operation.
(a) Calculate the initial total pressure inside the cylinder at 25 °C.
(b) Determine the partial pressure of each gas (Ne and Kr) immediately before the xenon is added.
(c) After the xenon is added but before the temperature change, compute the partial pressure of each of the three gases and the new total pressure.
(d) Finally, calculate the partial pressure of each gas and the total pressure after the temperature is raised to 50 °C.
(e) Discuss quantitatively which factor—addition of xenon or temperature increase—has a greater impact on the final total pressure. Support your conclusion with numerical evidence from parts (c) and (d).
