Problem

Consider two identical point masses kept at a fixed distance on a straight line. A third massive body is brought and placed far beyond one of the two masses but still on the same line. (i) Explain qualitatively how the position of zero net gravitational field between the original two masses is affected by the presence of the distant third body. (ii) State whether the shift in the position will be towards or away from the nearer of the two original masses and justify your answer using the vector nature of gravitational fields.
