Problem

A stone weighs 49 N49\,\text{N} on the surface of the Earth. When the same stone is taken to the top of a high mountain, its weight is found to be 48 N48\,\text{N}. Take gearth=9.8 m/s2g_{\text{earth}} = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. (a) Determine the mass of the stone. (b) Calculate the value of the acceleration due to gravity at the mountaintop. (c) Find the percentage decrease in the value of gg at the mountaintop as compared with its value on the Earth’s surface.
