Problem

A series RLC circuit has a fixed resistance of 30\,Ω and an inductance of 80\,\text{mH}. It is connected to a 230\,\text{V} (rms), 50\,\text{Hz} mains supply. (i) Determine the value of capacitance that must be inserted in series so that the circuit current leads the supply voltage by 30°. (Give the answer to two significant figures.) (ii) For the capacitance found in part (i), compute the power factor of the circuit. (iii) If the actual capacitor available has half the value obtained in part (i), state with proper reasoning whether the current will now lead or lag the voltage.
