Problem

A flat roof with an area of 12 m² consists of a 1.2 cm layer of concrete (thermal conductivity 1.1 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹) on top of 6.0 cm of expanded polystyrene insulation (thermal conductivity 0.032 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹). The interior ceiling is at 22 °C and the exterior surface of the concrete is at 0 °C. Calculate the steady-state rate at which thermal energy leaves the house through the roof. Give your answer in watts.
