Problem

Four point charges are fixed at the corners of a rectangle of length 8 cm8\,\text{cm} and breadth 6 cm6\,\text{cm} as follows: +3 μC+3\,\mu\text{C} at (0,0)(0,0), −3 μC-3\,\mu\text{C} at (8 cm,0)(8\,\text{cm},0), +3 μC+3\,\mu\text{C} at (8 cm,−6 cm)(8\,\text{cm},-6\,\text{cm}) and −3 μC-3\,\mu\text{C} at (0,−6 cm)(0,-6\,\text{cm}). A +2 μC+2\,\mu\text{C} charge is placed at the centre of the rectangle. (a) Calculate the xx-component of the net force on the central charge. (b) Calculate the yy-component of the net force on the central charge. (c) Hence find the magnitude and direction of the net force acting on the central charge.
