Problem

Two identical, small conducting spheres A and B are mounted on insulating stands. Initially they are separated by a distance of 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m}. Sphere A carries a charge of +7.5×10−8 C+7.5\times10^{-8}\,\text{C} while sphere B carries a charge of −2.5×10−8 C-2.5\times10^{-8}\,\text{C}. After the initial measurements, the spheres are brought into contact, allowed to reach electrostatic equilibrium, and then returned to their original separation. (a) Calculate the charge that resides on each sphere after they separate. (b) Determine the number of electrons that must have moved between the spheres during the contact interval. State clearly the sphere from which the electrons moved. (c) Compute the magnitude of the electrostatic force between the spheres after they have been separated to 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} again.
