Problem

A solid metallic sphere of radius 8 cm8\,\text{cm} is completely immersed first in fresh water and then in kerosene. (i) Calculate the volume of the sphere in m3\text{m}^3. (ii) Compute the buoyant force exerted by fresh water (density 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}) on the sphere. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (iii) Compute the buoyant force exerted by kerosene (density 800 kg m−3800\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}) on the same sphere. (iv) Hence find the ratio of the buoyant force in fresh water to that in kerosene and briefly explain why this ratio is independent of the value of gg.
