Problem

A family of rational functions is defined by fk(x)=x+1x2+kx+1f_k(x)=\dfrac{x+1}{x^{2}+kx+1}, where kk is a real parameter. (i) Show that the denominator has real zeros if and only if k2−4≥0k^{2}-4\ge0. (ii) Hence find all real values of kk for which the domain of fkf_k is the entire set of real numbers. (iii) For k=5k=5, determine the domain of fkf_k and express it in interval notation. (iv) For k=−1k=-1, find the domain and the range of fkf_k.
