Problem

Three non-collinear forces acting on a particle keep it in equilibrium. (i) State the mathematical conditions that must be satisfied for a particle to remain in equilibrium under the action of coplanar concurrent forces. (ii) Explain, with the aid of a labelled vector diagram, how these conditions lead to the conclusion that the three forces can be represented in magnitude and direction by the sides of a closed triangle taken in order. (iii) Using your reasoning in (ii), justify why two unequal forces alone cannot hold a particle in equilibrium.
