Problem

An electric kettle is marked "1200 W, 240 V". (i) Calculate the current drawn by the kettle when it is used at its rated voltage. (ii) Determine the resistance of the heating element inside the kettle. (iii) The kettle is connected in series with a lamp marked "60 W, 240 V" across a 240 V240\,\text{V} supply. Assuming each device keeps its normal resistance, calculate the current in the circuit and the power now developed in the kettle. Would the kettle be able to boil water under these conditions? Justify briefly.
