Problem

A ladder 1010 m long rests against a vertical wall. The foot of the ladder is pulled away from the wall along level ground. (i) Let xx m be the distance of the foot from the wall and yy m the height of the top above the ground. Write the equation connecting xx and yy. (ii) Obtain a formula for dydt\dfrac{dy}{dt} in terms of xx, yy and dxdt\dfrac{dx}{dt}. (iii) When the foot is 66 m from the wall and moving away at 0.5 m s−10.5\,\text{m s}^{-1}, determine the speed at which the top is sliding down the wall. (iv) At the same instant, find the rate of change of the area of the right-angled triangle formed by the ladder, the wall and the ground.
