Problem

A 2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg} wooden block rests on a horizontal tabletop. A student presses straight downward on the top of the block with a constant 15 N15\,\text{N} force. Friction between the block and the table is negligible. The acceleration due to gravity is g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. (1) Part (a) Draw a complete free-body diagram for the block while the student’s hand is in contact with it. Label each force with its type and the object that exerts it. (2) Part (b) Determine the magnitude of the normal force exerted on the block by the table while the student is pressing on it. (3) Part (c) Immediately after the student removes the downward force of the hand, determine the new magnitude of the normal force on the block and explain the change using your free-body diagrams.
