Problem

The one-parameter family of curves is defined by xn+yn=anx^{n}+y^{n}=a^{n} where n>1n>1 and aa is a positive constant. (i) Derive a general formula for dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} in terms of x, yx,\,y and nn.},{ (ii) Hence obtain a general expression for d2ydx2\dfrac{d^{2}y}{dx^{2}} for the family. (iii) Show that, at points on the curve where x=yx=y, the second derivative simplifies to an expression involving only xx and nn. State this simplified form.
