Problem

For the reaction 2X(g)⇌3Y(g)2X(g) \rightleftharpoons 3Y(g) in a sealed container, the forward and reverse reaction rates are each 4.0×10−5 mol L−1 s−14.0 \times 10^{-5}\,\text{mol}\,\text{L}^{-1}\,\text{s}^{-1} at a particular instant. (i) What is the net rate of change of [X][X] at that instant? (ii) What is the net rate of change of [Y][Y] at that instant? (iii) Briefly justify why both concentrations remain constant despite the unequal stoichiometric coefficients.
