Problem
A stationary sound source emits sound waves of frequency 800 Hz. These sound waves are reflected from an observer, O, who is moving towards the source at a speed of 10 ms−1. Another observer, P, standing next to the source hears the sound waves reflected from O and notices that they are of a different frequency to the sound waves he can hear directly from the source. (The speed of sound in air is 330 ms−1.) Calculate the frequency of
(1) the sound waves heard by the moving observer, O.
(2) the sound waves reflected from the moving observer, O, and heard by the stationary observer, P.
