Problem

A reversible heat engine operates between a hot reservoir at temperature TH=500 KT_H = 500\,\text{K} and a cold reservoir at TC=300 KT_C = 300\,\text{K}. During each cycle the engine absorbs QH=2000 JQ_H = 2000\,\text{J} of heat from the hot reservoir. (i) Calculate the heat QCQ_C rejected to the cold reservoir and the work WW obtained per cycle. (ii) Find the entropy change of the working substance for each of the four processes that make up the Carnot cycle and hence obtain the total entropy change of the substance for one complete cycle. (iii) Determine the entropy change of the two reservoirs taken together. (iv) Using your results, state the value of the total entropy change of the universe for the cycle and comment on its significance.
