Problem

While studying the astronomical refracting telescope, a student draws the following construction: • Parallel rays from a distant star converge and meet exactly at the centre of the objective lens. • The eyepiece is then shown producing an erect virtual image. (i) Identify and explain two errors present in this construction. (ii) Redraw the correct ray diagram for an astronomical telescope in normal adjustment. (iii) State what would happen to the final image if a real telescope were built according to the student’s incorrect diagram.
