Problem

A solid, non-conducting sphere of radius RR possesses a volume charge density that varies with radial distance according to ρ(r)=ρ0 rR\rho(r)=\rho_0\,\dfrac{r}{R}, where ρ0\rho_0 is a positive constant. (i) Obtain an expression for the total charge contained within the sphere. (ii) Derive the expression for the magnitude of the electric field as a function of the distance rr from the centre for (a) r<Rr<R and (b) r≥Rr\ge R. (iii) Show that the electric field attains a maximum value at a certain distance rmr_m inside the sphere and determine rmr_m in terms of RR.
