Problem

A car is travelling along a straight road at 20 m/s20\,\text{m/s}. It first accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s22\,\text{m/s}^{2} for 5 s5\,\text{s} and then immediately decelerates uniformly at 4 m/s24\,\text{m/s}^{2} until its speed is reduced to 10 m/s10\,\text{m/s}. Answer the following: (i) Sketch a velocity–time graph representing the complete motion. (ii) Calculate the total displacement covered during the entire motion described. (iii) Find the average acceleration for the whole period from the start of acceleration to the end of deceleration.
