Problem

An ideal gas is taken through an isothermal process at a temperature of 300 K300\,\text{K}. (i) State the sign convention adopted in thermodynamics for the work associated with a system during a change in volume. (ii) For the given gas, explain qualitatively whether the work will be positive, negative or zero when the gas is compressed from 6.0 L6.0\,\text{L} to 2.0 L2.0\,\text{L} at 300 K300\,\text{K}. (iii) Without carrying out any numerical calculation, compare the magnitude of the work done during the compression in part (ii) with that during a compression from 6.0 L6.0\,\text{L} to 4.0 L4.0\,\text{L} at the same temperature. Give a reason for your answer.
