Problem

A uniform rectangular wooden log has a base area of 0.12 m20.12\,\text{m}^2, a height of 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} and a density of 750 kg m−3750\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. The log floats upright in fresh water (ρ=1000 kg m−3\rho = 1000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}). (i) Determine the height of the log that projects above the water surface when no extra load is placed on it. (ii) A steel block of mass 6 kg6\,\text{kg} is gently placed on the top face of the log and remains completely dry. Calculate the new height of the log that remains above water. (iii) Find the maximum additional mass that can be placed on the log before its top face just reaches the water surface.
