Problem

A researcher wishes to produce a monochromatic neutron beam whose de Broglie wavelength is 0.15 nm0.15\,\text{nm}. (Mass of a neutron =1.675×10−27 kg=1.675\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}; mass of an electron =9.11×10−31 kg=9.11\times10^{-31}\,\text{kg}.) (i) Determine the speed required for the neutrons to achieve the specified wavelength. (ii) If an electron beam is to possess the same wavelength, calculate the speed that the electrons must have. (iii) Give a brief qualitative explanation for the large difference in the two speeds obtained.
