Problem

Two identical rigid 5.00 L flasks are each charged with 1.00 mol of gas at 250 K. Flask A contains Cl₂(g); flask B contains CH₄(g). A precision manometer is used to compare the pressure in each flask to the pressure predicted for an ideal gas under the same conditions. (a) Calculate the pressure that would be predicted for either sample if the gas behaved ideally. Show your work and include appropriate units. (b) Without performing additional calculations, predict which gas will exhibit the larger negative deviation (that is, the larger difference in the direction of a lower measured pressure relative to the ideal prediction). Explain your reasoning in terms of the dominant intermolecular forces present in each gas. (c) Identify the specific type of intermolecular force primarily responsible for the deviation in the gas you selected in part (b), and explain how this force leads to a reduction in the measured pressure. (d) Suppose the temperature of both flasks is increased to 500 K while all other conditions remain constant. Describe qualitatively how the magnitude of the pressure deviation would change for each gas, and justify your answer.
