Problem

A mast of height 25 m is erected at the edge of a cliff that is 60 m above sea level. An observer standing on the deck of a ship, 10 m above sea surface, measures the angle of elevation of the top of the mast to be 19°. The foot of the cliff, the base of the mast, and the observer are all in a vertical plane. (i) Calculate the vertical height difference between the observer’s eye and the top of the mast. (ii) Determine the horizontal distance between the ship and the foot of the cliff, correct to the nearest metre. (iii) Express this horizontal distance to the nearest tenth of a kilometre.
