Problem
(a) For a series RLC circuit, describe qualitatively how the inductive reactance XL and the capacitive reactance XC vary with the frequency of the applied alternating source.
(b) Draw a neatly labelled qualitative graph showing the variation of the circuit impedance Z with frequency. Indicate the resonant frequency f0 on the graph.
(c) Using the graph drawn in part (b), explain why the current amplitude in the circuit attains a maximum value at f0 and decreases on either side of it.
(d) At a frequency much lower than f0, state whether the circuit behaves predominantly as an inductive or a capacitive circuit. Give a reason for your answer.
(e) At a frequency much higher than f0, state whether the circuit behaves predominantly as an inductive or a capacitive circuit. Give a reason for your answer.
