A metal component used in a space mission shows a reading of 1.20kN when suspended from a spring balance on the Earth’s surface.
(i) Determine the mass of the component on the Earth where the value of acceleration due to gravity is 9.81m/s2.
(ii) When the component is taken to a distant planet, the spring balance shows a reading of 0.36kN. Calculate the value of acceleration due to gravity on that planet.
(iii) Using your answer from part (i), calculate what the weight of the component would be on the Moon, given that the value of acceleration due to gravity there is one-sixth of that on the Earth.
(iv) Arrange the three weights obtained (Earth, distant planet, Moon) in ascending order and comment on the reason for their difference.
