Problem

Three resistors R1R_{1}, R2R_{2} and R3R_{3} are connected in series with a dc source. (i) Define a series circuit and state any two characteristic features of current and potential difference in such a circuit. (ii) Explain, with reasons, why the same current flows through each resistor while the potential difference divides among them. (iii) Show that the equivalent resistance RsR_{s} of the combination is equal to the algebraic sum R1+R2+R3R_{1}+R_{2}+R_{3}. (iv) If R1=3 ΩR_{1}=3\,\Omega, R2=5 ΩR_{2}=5\,\Omega and R3=7 ΩR_{3}=7\,\Omega, calculate the ratio of the potential difference across R2R_{2} to that across R3R_{3}.
