Problem

An electron beam is produced by accelerating electrons from rest through a potential difference of 150 V. The beam then passes through a single narrow slit of width 1.0 nm before striking a screen. (i) Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of the electrons in the beam. Take Planck’s constant h=6.63×10−34 J sh = 6.63 \times 10^{-34}\,\text{J s} and the mass of the electron me=9.11×10−31 kgm_e = 9.11 \times 10^{-31}\,\text{kg}. (ii) Compare the wavelength obtained in part (i) with the slit width and predict whether a noticeable diffraction pattern will be produced on the screen. Give a brief justification. (iii) State which aspect of the electron’s dual nature is revealed (wave or particle) by the outcome you have predicted.
