Problem

For a sealed capsule containing a radioactive isotope Z, the mass of undecayed atoms remaining is tracked and plotted as a smooth curve of mass m(t)m(t) versus time tt: • m=160 μgm = 160\,\mu\text{g} at t=0 ht = 0\,\text{h} • m=113 μgm = 113\,\mu\text{g} at t=2.5 ht = 2.5\,\text{h} • m=80 μgm = 80\,\mu\text{g} at t=5.0 ht = 5.0\,\text{h} • m=57 μgm = 57\,\mu\text{g} at t=7.5 ht = 7.5\,\text{h} • m=40 μgm = 40\,\mu\text{g} at t=10.0 ht = 10.0\,\text{h} Assume the trend represents an ideal, single-isotope exponential decay. (a) Determine the half-life of isotope Z from the plotted data. (b) Predict the mass of undecayed isotope Z that will remain at t=15.0 ht = 15.0\,\text{h}. Show your reasoning. (c) If the capsule originally contained 320 μg320\,\mu\text{g} of isotope Z at the time of manufacture, estimate how many hours before t=0t = 0 the capsule was filled. Clearly outline the steps you used to reach your estimate.
