Problem

A square steel plate of side 40 cm40\,\text{cm} has a circular hole of radius 5 cm5\,\text{cm} drilled through its centre. The plate is subjected to a compressive force of 6.0 kN6.0\,\text{kN} normal to its surface. (i) Compute the net area of the plate that actually transmits the force. (ii) Determine the pressure developed on the plate. (iii) If the allowable working pressure for this grade of steel is 1.5×105 Pa1.5\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}, calculate the maximum normal force that can be applied on the perforated plate without exceeding the allowable pressure.
