Problem

A particle starts from rest and moves with a uniform acceleration of 2 m s−22\,\text{m s}^{-2} for t1t_1 seconds, after which it continues with the constant velocity just reached for another 6 s6\,\text{s}. It then decelerates uniformly to rest in 3 s3\,\text{s}. The total displacement covered during the whole motion is 180 m180\,\text{m}. (i) Draw the velocity–time graph representing the complete motion. (ii) Calculate t1t_1 correct to one decimal place. (iii) From the graph, write the maximum velocity attained by the particle.
