Problem
(i) Define, in words, what is meant by reflecting a point in (a) the x-axis, (b) the y-axis.
(ii) Explain, without plotting, why reflecting any point first in the x-axis and then in the y-axis gives the same final image as reflecting it directly in the origin.
(iii) For each point given below, state the quadrant in which the point lies and the quadrant in which its image will lie when it is reflected in the origin.
(a) P(3,5) (b) Q(−4,2) (c) R(−6,−7) (d) S(5,−1)
(iv) Describe, in a sentence for each case, how the signs of the coordinates change under the reflection in the origin.
(v) Give one real-life situation where ideas of reflecting across an axis can be applied in everyday design or art.
